The Hierarchy of Placement
- The Plate Center: The most modern and common placement for a fabric napkin is directly on the dinner plate. This works best if you are using a decorative fold or a napkin ring.
- To the Left: Traditionally, the napkin is placed to the left of the forks. The open corner should be at the bottom right to make it easy for guests to pick up and unfold.
- The Runner’s Role: Your runner should act as the “anchor” for your centerpiece. Ensure that the candles and floral arrangements do not exceed the width of the runner to maintain visual balance.
Pro Etiquette Tip: If you have to leave the table during the meal, place your napkin on the seat of your chair. This signals to the server (or your host) that you intend to return.
